The Taking of Christ

Judas kisses Christ while armored soldiers seize him; at right, a man holding a lantern—a self-portrait of Caravaggio—illuminates the nocturnal betrayal.

Significance

Lost for centuries and rediscovered in a Jesuit residence in Dublin in 1990, it is now considered one of Caravaggio's greatest works. The compression of bodies creates claustrophobic intensity.
