The Fortune Teller (Louvre)

c. 1594

A gypsy fortune teller reads the palm of a fashionably dressed young man while surreptitiously slipping a ring from his finger, capturing a moment of street-level deception.

Significance

One of Caravaggio's earliest genre paintings, depicting contemporary Roman street life rather than religious subjects. This version, likely painted slightly earlier than the Capitoline version, helped establish the theme of cardsharps and tricksters that became popular across Europe.
