Salome turns away from the Baptist's head on her platter as the executioner presents his grim trophy; an old woman looks on with pity.

Significance

One of several versions Caravaggio painted of this subject in his final years. The severed head may again be a self-portrait, reflecting his obsession with his own mortality.
