The Entombment of Christ

Christ's body is lowered onto the stone of unction, supported by Nicodemus and John, while the three Marys grieve above in a tight pyramidal composition.

Significance

Considered Caravaggio's most perfectly composed altarpiece. Rubens copied it in Rome, and it influenced Géricault's Raft of the Medusa two centuries later.
