Bacchus

A fleshy, androgynous young Bacchus offers a glass of wine to the viewer, his fingers dirty, a bowl of overripe fruit before him.

Significance

Early work painted for Cardinal Del Monte, it subverts classical idealization with naturalistic details. Infrared imaging revealed a tiny self-portrait in the wine carafe.
