The Fighting Temeraire

The ghost-like HMS Temeraire, a veteran of the Battle of Trafalgar, is towed by a steam tug to be broken up, passing through a fiery sunset.

Significance

Voted Britain's greatest painting in 2005, it elegizes the passing of the age of sail. Turner's atmospheric treatment of light anticipates Impressionism by decades.
