Portrait of a Viennese socialite seated on a golden throne, her face and hands emerging from an elaborate golden mosaic of spirals, eyes, and geometric patterns.

Significance

The "Woman in Gold" was looted by the Nazis and returned to the Bloch-Bauer heirs in 2006. Sold for $135 million, it was then the highest price ever paid for a painting.
