Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe

A nude woman picnics with two clothed men in a forest setting, while another woman bathes in the background, all rendered with bold, flat brushwork.

Significance

Rejected from the 1863 Salon, it became the centerpiece of the Salon des Refusés. Manet's modern reworking of Renaissance composition outraged critics and launched modernism.
