A black square on a white ground—the most radical reduction of painting to its essential elements, exhibited in the corner traditionally reserved for religious icons.

Significance

The "zero point of painting," declaring a new beginning for art freed from representation. Malevich called it "the first step of pure creation." X-rays revealed earlier compositions beneath.
