Mythological scene depicting the goddess Venus emerging from the sea as a fully grown woman, blown toward shore by the winds, greeted by a nymph with a cloak.

Significance

First large-scale nude since antiquity and a defining work of the Renaissance revival of classical subjects. Its graceful linearity and poetic beauty made it an icon of Western art.
