Georges Seurat

French
1859–1891

Scientifically minded painter who developed pointillism, using tiny dots of color to build luminous compositions. His carefully constructed scenes of modern life explored optics, color theory, and social structure. Seurat's method had a decisive impact on later Neo-Impressionists and abstract artists.
